Training Material for Primary School Teachers in Crisis Context, Uganda

The Teacher Professional Development (TPD) package has been developed to provide support for teachers recruited to teach in refugee settlements and other emergency related education situations in Uganda. In these situations, teachers are often unprepared to enter the classroom and address the needs of children affected by crisis and there is a strong need for interventions focusing on training and building teachers’ capacities. With reference to relevance, strengthening existing structures and sustainability the materials introduce peer to peer support through Teacher Learning Circles. The materials can however, also be used for qualified teachers who are new to teaching in crisis contexts, require refreshment or training in specific relevant areas such as child protection.

The Teacher Professional Development package has been developed by contextualizing and adapting the TiCC Training Package for Primary School Teachers in Crisis Contexts as well as the TiCC Peer Coaching Pack. The training material has been adapted to the specific needs identified by the implementing partners and in collaboration with local stakeholders such as District Education Officials (DEOs), Primary Teachers’ College (PTC), local facilitators and teachers. The contextualization process was also informed by the teacher needs assessment carried out in Uganda in August 2018.
