More than 2 million children are unable to return to school due to ongoing security risks across the West and Central African region. There are an estimated 9,288 schools closed and 44,000 teachers who will not be able to reach their classrooms, while schools are starting again.

The oil-rich Iraqi governorate of Kirkuk lies at the heart of this dispute and reflects the country’s ethnic and religious diversity. This paper explores the influence of these conflicts and contests on education in the city of Kirkuk.
