In 2015, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals, the global community made a promise to reach all children with inclusive, equitable, and quality education by 2030 (SDG 4).

Yet, as we near the 10-year countdown to achieve these goals, we are far from reaching them. Much-needed funding for education has been waning. On current trends, 225 million young people will not be in school by 2030, depriving them of the necessary basic skills to access the labor market, combat poverty, improve their health and well-being, or build more stable, secure, and peaceful communities.

On the occasion of the 74th United Nations General Assembly and the first Sustainable Development Goal Summit, the international community will have the opportunity to move one step closer to achieving SDG 4 by supporting two of the most recent mechanisms for funding education globally: the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) fund and the International Finance Facility for Education (IFFEd).

On September 25th the “Leave No One Behind: Accelerating the SDGs through Quality Education” event – hosted by Education Cannot Wait and the Education Commission, in partnership with Global Citizen – will bring together youth advocates and celebrity champions to encourage representatives of Member States, UN agencies, multilateral organizations, civil society organizations, and the private sector to pledge support for ECW as it accelerates its work to reach those furthest left behind in crises with quality education. This event will also call on participants to support IFFEd’s establishment to specifically address the education needs of millions of children in lower-middle-income countries with innovative financing solutions.
