Dubai Cares Announces E-Cubed Round 2 Winners

The call for proposals, launched in May 2018, prompted 69 proposals ranging in context, methodology and thematic focus. 33% of these proposals were put forward by applicants local to under-represented contexts. This round of proposals saw an increased focus on Inclusive Education and Disabilities, and Disaster Risk Reduction, while the top two thematic areas proposed were Adolescents and Youth, and Psychosocial Support and Social and Emotional Learning.

After a careful selection process, Dubai Cares has selected the following four research projects for funding:

Promising policies for the effective management of teachers in refugee contexts: Understanding policy and practice
International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO) and Education Development Trust

The study will assess existing policies that inform teacher management. It will focus on refugee contexts in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, in order to provide governments with evidence-based policy guidance on teacher management in refugee contexts.

Understanding Children’s Holistic Development, Program Implementation and Effectiveness in Context: Evidence to Guide Investments in Social Emotional Learning
New York University - Global TIES for Children

Covering Niger, Lebanon and Sierra Leone, this research aims to generate, collectively interpret, and clearly communicate evidence to inform the design of culturally grounded social and emotional learning (SEL) programs that are more impactful, easily implemented, and targeted than prevailing methods.

How does participation in a Safe Healing and Learning Spaces intervention shape adolescents' trajectories and outcomes in Northeast Nigeria?
Family Health International (FHI 360) and the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID)

The research seeks to examine how participation in non-formal accelerated education programs in northeast Nigeria may, over time, impact female and male adolescents’ growth trajectories.

Teachers, Schools and Communities: A framework for improving basic education in gang controlled territories
Central American University (Universidad Centroamericana)

The research aims to explore the role that social relationships in El Salvador play in creating positive school environments and administering quality education where gang control and political insecurity are everyday concerns.

Dear INEE community,

Since its launch, E-Cubed has set out to support the creation of global public goods by and for the EiE sector. We are delighted that E-Cubed’s second call for proposals produced 69 proposals and continued to generate important insights about what gaps there are in the EiE evidence base.

After careful consideration and review of the proposals shortlisted by the E-Cubed advisory panel, Dubai Cares has chosen 4 proposals for funding. These proposals cover a diverse range of research locations, methodologies, and inquiries. All 4 proposals, however, share a common aim of generating globally relevant and culturally grounded evidence in under-researched areas, with a focus on addressing the needs, questions, and voices of local actors.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to INEE, whose dedication, leadership, and expertise have been core to the efforts of funding evidence for EiE, and to the E-Cubed advisory panel, whose in-depth analysis and ranking of the proposals guarantees the required rigor and quality to ensure E-Cubed contributes relevant global public goods to those who work to deliver education to children and youth caught in emergencies.
