This paper draws data from an innovative research project tracing former refugee teachers who received teacher training from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) over a seventeen year long education program in refugee camps in Guinea (1991-2008).

In 2008, UNICEF, together with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education and the national Teacher Training institutions, developed a behaviour change programme for teachers entitled “Emerging Issues.”

In order to strengthen its efforts to promote psychosocial support within educational programming in emergencies, UNICEF has developed these teacher-training materials to promote greater understanding of the impact of and effective responses to the psychosocial impact of emergencies on learners.

Teacher training is not only a means of improving the immediate standard of education, but also an investment in a future educational system.

The ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers (1966) and the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel (1997) are two international instruments which set out principles concerning the rights and responsibilities of educators, ranging from the pre-school level through university.

La Recomendación de la OIT y la UNESCO relativa a la situación del personal docente (1966) y la Recomendación de la UNESCO relativa a la condición del personal docente de la enseñanza superior (1997) son dos instrumentos internacionales que definen principios sobre los derechos y las responsabilidades de los docentes desde el nivel preescolar hasta la universidad.

La Recommandation OIT/UNESCO concernant la condition du personnel enseignant (1966) et la Recommandation de l’UNESCO concernant la condition du personnel enseignant de l’enseignement supérieur (1997) sont deux instrument internationaux qui établissent le principe des droits et des responsabilités des éducateurs, du niveau préscolaire jusqu’à l’université.
