Need to Know Guidance: Working with LGBTIQ+ Persons in Forced Displacement

In situations of forced displacement, individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and other diverse identities (LGBTIQ+) have the same rights and basic needs as, and face the same challenges as, other displaced persons. In addition, they encounter distinct protection risks because their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and/or sex characteristics (SOGIESC) do not conform to prevailing sociocultural norms.

"Need to Know Guidance: Working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer Persons in Forced Displacement" is a guidance note primarily aimed at UNHCR staff, though it is also a useful resource for anyone who works with LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers and refugees. It offers guidance on working with LGBTQIA+ individuals in forced displacement contexts. Moreover, it offers terminology, guiding principles, and recommendations for promoting safe and inclusive spaces and addressing operational protection risks.
