Against this background, IIEP-UNESCO undertook a wide range of studies on capacity development for achieving EFA. The focus is on educational planning and management because stronger capacities in these areas may have an important spill-over effect on the system as a whole.

This study explored the psychosocial benefits of an emergency education intervention serving adolescents displaced by the war in Chechnya. It set out to describe key stressors and sources of social support available to youth served by the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) emergency education program.

This paper highlights the vulnerability and exclusion of children with disability in the basic regular education system. However, there is a need to emphasize that inclusive education has to go beyond primary education to secondary, tertiary, vocational training and lifelong learning opportunities.

This study focuses on conflict prevention consistent with the activities outlined in the General Assembly and Security Council resolutions on Sustaining Peace, that is, as “activities aimed at preventing the outbreak, escalation, continuation and recurrence of conflict, addressing root causes, assisting parties to conflict to end hostilities, ensuring national reconciliation and moving towards recovery, reconstruction and development."

In spring 1999, after a short but bloody civil war, hundreds of thousands of refugees were repatriated to Kosovo from neighbouring lands, and the United Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo (UNMIK) was established. Provision of education, to people of all ethnic origins, was an enormous challenge, and this book seeks to identify lessons to be learned from the experience.
