Crisis Spotlight: Venezuela

Background
On June 24, 2026, two consecutive earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela. The first a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, followed one minute later by a magnitude 7.5, triggering a national emergency with severe damage to critical infrastructure and public services. The hardest-hit areas include the Capital District, La Guaira, Miranda, Carabobo, and Yaracuy, with significant structural damage, service disruptions, and population displacement .
According to iMMAP's rapid impact analysis, around 590,000 people experienced severe to violent shaking across both events and over 16 million people were within the total earthquake footprint.
As of June 28, preliminary figures indicate 1,450 people dead and 3,150 injured, 774 buildings damaged or collapsed, 189 collapsed, 585 partially collapsed.
Note: The figures are preliminary and will continue to be updated as damage and needs assessments progress. Given the scale of the earthquake, these figures may increase in the coming days.
