Education Programming for Crisis Affected Youth: IRC in Southern Sudan
The International Rescue Committee established the Child and Youth Protection and Development (CYPD) technical unit in 1997 in order to strengthen its ability to respond to the complex needs of children and youth in conflict and post-conflict settings. The Y&L pilot project in South Sudan was developed in partnership with the Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children, and from 2008 complimented with funding from UNICEF. The project aimed to contribute to the social and economic recovery of war-affected communities by equipping displaced and vulnerable youth (ages 15 to 24) with the transferable and adaptable skill sets needed to sustain their livelihoods through a vocational training program being implemented on 2 sites Aweil Town and Juba.
