New Online Course - Gender Responsive Education in Emergencies!
The Humanitarian Leadership Academy are delighted to share a new Education in Emergencies (EiE) Online course on Kaya – Gender Responsive Education in Emergencies! This free online course was developed in partnership with Plan international and INEE is part of the EiE Online series endorsed by INEE.
Around the world girls, boys, women, men and individuals with other gender identities experience the world differently due to societal gender roles, cultural biases, and systemic barriers. As a result, there are often inequalities in and barriers to the different services and opportunities to which individuals have access, including education. Emergencies exacerbate these gender-based barriers to education and create new ones.
Gender Responsive Education in Emergencies looks at these gender-based barriers to education, including sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and explores ways in which they can be reduced so that all children can access education in emergencies. It also considers the contribution that education in emergencies can make to reducing these systemic and societal barriers, i.e. its contribution to transforming gender relations and furthering equality.
“When education is available equitably, is of good quality, relevant, inclusive, and gender-responsive, it can break cycles of conflict and violence and promote peace, stability, and greater gender equality. But when education programming does not take into account the specific gendered needs of girls, boys, and gender non-conforming children and youth, it risks exacerbating pre-existing inequalities and reinforcing harmful gender norms. It is therefore essential that education and EiE practitioners have the information and skills needed to ensure that their programs consider and address the specific gendered needs of all learners and work to transform harmful gender roles, norms and power relations in education.” – Lauren Gerken, Gender Coordinator at INEE
After completing the course, you will be able to:
- Describe key terms and concepts related to an intersectional integration of gender equality into EiE programming and use them to explain the different gender-based barriers faced by girls, boys, women, and men to education in emergencies.
- Name key tools for integrating gender equality into EiE and identify essential actions to integrate gender equality across all aspects of the Humanitarian Programme Cycle.
- Explain the process of analyzing and evaluating gender and other identity-based barriers in accessing education in emergencies and identify key tools to support this process.
- Identify potential strategies to fulfil the humanitarian mandate to prevent, mitigate, and respond to instances of Gender-based Violence (GBV) in all humanitarian programming, including EiE.
