Climate Change, Education, and Gender Perspectives on Protecting Future Generations
Malala Fund, Center for Global Development
Date & time: 5 October, 2023 at 4pm BST

This event, co-hosted by Malala Fund and the Center for Global Development, will highlight the links between education and climate change. Each year, millions of learners lose access to school due to climate- and environment-related events like extreme weather events and air pollution. Higher climate risks mean greater risks to education, through increased likelihood of internal displacement, food insecurity, damage to education infrastructure, and negative impacts on children’s health and wellbeing. This is especially true for girls, who are often the most affected by household measures to adapt. But despite their severity, these issues have not been at the heart of either education or climate debates, and their critical intersection is often overlooked. This leads to missed opportunities for evidence-based action and comprehensive solutions. How can education, especially for girls, be resilient to climate change?

On October 26, 2023, the Population Council will convene a core group of practitioners, researchers, and supporters to hear from the those working on the ground to reach displaced adolescent girls with the critical knowledge, skills, and supports they need to claim their rights and persevere in high-stress settings. Speakers will discuss challenges of crafting evidence-based programs to lay the foundations of improved physical and community security, social participation, reproductive health, choice in marriage and childbearing, psychological well-being, and livelihoods engagement in dynamic and often regressive humanitarian settings. Experience in three distinct contexts will be shared from practitioners and researchers working with: Syrians living in refugee camps in South Beirut, Lebanon; Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh; and displaced Somalis in Wajir, Kenya.
