This report identifies concerning trends for the safety and wellbeing of children living in areas impacted by conflict. The last three decades have seen a staggering rise in the number of children living under the shadow of war, as well as an increase in heinous attacks committed against children. There is an urgent need for action to end what is too often a war on children.

We draw on the case of Colombia, which signed a peace agreement in 2016 after more than five decades of armed conflict and massive internal displacement, to analyze how transitional justice processes are incorporated within the education system.

This policy brief provides an overview of the educational sector in Lebanon immediately prior to the escalation of Israel’s aggression in the autumn of 2024. Establishing a baseline for the conditions in the sector is essential for assessing the expected significant impacts on education in Lebanon. By evaluating the educational landscape just before the escalation of Israel’s aggression, this brief will help in formulating strategic and targeted interventions in educational policy and practice for both the immediate crisis and its protracted impacts while also considering the pre-existing challenges in Lebanon’s education sector.

The dimensions represent key categories to consider when seeking to understand the settings affected by conflict and crisis, and serve as a heuristic tool to describe the contextual setting of conflict and crisis for research studies.

This technical brief highlights key findings from a detailed report of a rigorous review of the existing body of research in education in the conflict-affected context of Myanmar: Diversity and Fragmentation of Myanmar Education: Schooling Shaped by Protracted Conflict and Crisis (Rinehart et al, 2024) This review draws upon relevant studies conducted since 2000 as well as complementary findings from journalistic writing and key informant interviews conducted in 2024. It organises, describes and analyses the current evidence base for education in Myanmar and identifies evidence gaps for future research.

Palestinian students have faced significant challenges in accessing quality and safe education for decades. However, the escalation of violence following the events of October 7th have exacerbated this education crisis to unprecedented levels. In Gaza, the war has nearly destroyed the education system, preventing almost all learning. Children in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have faced increasing violence and restrictions since October 7th too, worsening existing challenges and creating new barriers for all 782,000 students. 10 months into this crisis, the threats to the right to education for Palestinian students have never been so serious.

This report analyses pre and post-7 October MHPSS needs in Gaza, the drivers of needs, and MHPSS resources and coping capacities, highlighting the specific needs of people of different genders and ages, people with disabilities, healthcare workers, and detained Palestinians.
