On the occasion of World Arabic Language Day, 18 December, we want to acknowledge the important role that the INEE Arabic Language Community (ALC) plays in facilitating knowledge and making connections with community educators, teachers, and parents working in education in emergencies (EiE) contexts. The ALC is a vibrant space allowing a large diverse of education actors from the Middle East and North Africa to come together to share, learn, and expand knowledge. WorldArabicDay

Arabic is the fourth most spoken language globally, yet less than three percent of digital content online is available in Arabic. The INEE ALC, with the support of a devoted group of volunteers from Arab countries, has worked tirelessly to ensure quality content is available in Arabic on the INEE website (inee.org/ar) and other platforms, in order to reach more education actors in crisis settings. INEE also provides various means of communications for Arabic language members to ensure their voices are present and to facilitate learning in Arabic.

This past year, and the global pandemic in particular, has brought enormous challenges for education communities worldwide. We have confronted new ways of teaching, learning, meeting, and working. And these challenges have provided us with unique opportunities to build our Arabic language community and reach out to new members. Conducting more meetings, webinars, and trainings virtually allowed us to reach even more members who wouldn’t have been able to participate in traditional face-to-face activities. And the virtual spaces have made it easier for Arabic-speaking educators to convene, network, share experience, and really participate in network activities in their own language.

“The Arabic language is one of the most important components of the Arab identity, as it has conveyed history to us. It is a living language, the fourth most important language in the world, and is spoken by more than 300 million people. How can we care and work in education in the Middle East region which is full of many crises and emergencies without working in the mother tongue of that region? I cannot help but thank the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies for convening a community that includes education workers as they work together to affirm the right to education in crises and emergencies and their contribution to expertise and knowledge."

"Arabic language is neither an element nor an ethnicity, nor bound by regional or local boundaries. Everyone who speaks Arabic is an Arab. It unifies and helps to accept others and their integration into our community."

Sahar Mustafa, INEE ALC member
