At least 100 million people were forced to flee their homes during the last 10 years, seeking refuge either within or outside the borders of their country. Forced displacement and statelessness remained high on the international agenda in recent years and continued to generate dramatic headlines in every part of the world.

The CPWG commissioned this research in order to address the consistent deprioritization of child protection in humanitarian action, reported year on year by child protection coordination groups and evidenced by statistics on funding and the findings of other research efforts in the humanitarian sector.

This review provides an overview of the evidence base on learning outcomes for adolescents in contexts of fragility, crisis and emergencies – with a focus on adolescent girls and adolescents with disabilities (AwD). While the evidence base at the secondary level is relatively small, effective interventions echo best practices and lessons from the broader education literature.

Experts from the social sciences, humanities, arts, and experimental sciences offer interdisciplinary perspectives to translate critical analysis into concrete action. This Theirworld report looks at the urgent need for Safe Spaces in emergencies – places where babies, young children and their caregivers can get support to counter the negative impacts of crisis situations on children’s growth and development. The report warns the international community is neglecting millions of vulnerable babies and young children affected by conflicts and disasters.
