Glossary Term

Accountability has been called a cultural keyword, with no straightforward definition. It draws meaning from context – its interaction with other words in the culture in which it plays a more or less central and often controversial role. Disciplines and languages have no common definition of accountability, but it can be considered to have three key elements: Clearly defined responsibilities; Obligation to provide an account of how responsibilities have been met; Legal, political, social or moral justification for the obligation to account.
