Education and Social Cohesion in Pakistan

Pakistan’s policy formulations and reforms in education are mostly driven by international development agendas. Explicit focus on the role of social cohesion in education policies would be more productive. A national consensus, produced through bottom-up participatory consultations, on the aims of education and values needed to tackle the root causes of violence in Pakistani society appears crucial. Developing a rigorous knowledge base on the prevalence of violence in schools and the gendered impact of violence on students and youth is the first step towards tackling gender-based violence in educational and public spaces. Tightening of regulatory mechanisms regarding the preparation and governance of teachers, fees structure and teaching and learning materials would ensure great harmony and reduce social stratification. The production of gender-sensitive curricula is much needed. Supporting teacher educators and teachers in how to challenge gendered norms and gender-based violence would strengthen the implementation of the above.
