The Journal on Education in Emergencies (JEiE) is published by the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) in partnership with the International Education (IE) program and housed at the Center for Practice and Research at the Intersection of Information, Society, and Methodology (PRIISM) at New York University (NYU).
The Journal on Education in Emergencies is the first and only double-anonymized, peer reviewed academic journal dedicated in its entirety to the study of education in emergencies (EiE). JEiE publishes scholarly and practitioner work on EiE, defined as “quality learning opportunities for all ages in situations of crisis” (INEE 2010). Building on the tradition of collaboration between practitioners and academics in the EiE field, JEiE’s purpose is to improve learning in and across service-delivery, policymaking, and academic institutions by providing a space where scholars and practitioners can publish rigorous quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research articles, and robust and compelling field notes that both inform policy and practice and stir debate. JEiE provides access to the ideas and evidence needed to inform sound EiE programming, policymaking, funding decisions, academic program curricula, and future research.
JEiE seeks manuscripts that draw on and advance existing knowledge on EiE and build novel evidence that addresses educational challenges in humanitarian and/or development settings. We welcome both theoretical and empirical research articles that address a broad range of EiE themes, including natural disasters, conflict/fragile states, conflict sensitive-education, attacks on education, education for peacebuilding, peace education, conflict mitigation and reduction, education and fragility, resilience, transitions from emergency to recovery/post-conflict to development, forced migration and displacement, etc.
Additionally, JEiE welcomes field note submissions that present innovative tools or approaches related to education in emergencies, progress, insights, and/or challenges in designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating EiE initiatives, or observations and commentary on EiE research. Recognizing the global scope of these issues, JEiE seeks submissions from all regions of the world. However, only manuscripts written in English will be considered for publication at this time.
All manuscripts are subject to a double-anonymized peer review process and must have a 200-word abstract. Research articles must adhere to a 9,000-word limit (including references, tables, and figures) and field notes submissions must be 4,000 words or fewer (including references, tables, and figures). Formatting and references should follow Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition, author-date convention.
The deadline for submitting manuscripts is January 31, 2023. If helpful, authors are invited to submit a 200-word abstract by December 31, 2022, for brief comment from the JEiE Editorial Office regarding their manuscript’s suitability for inclusion in JEiE. Submission of an abstract by this date is optional and at the author’s discretion. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis.
