Education Governance

This research draws on a conceptual framework that captures the economic, cultural, political, and social dimensions of education governance and inequality and their relation to conflict and peace.

This study’s quantitative analysis draws on statistical datasets to examine the dimensions of inequality (in terms of educational access, resources and outcomes). The analysis highlights the importance of considering both income inequality within regions and relative deprivation among regions, since some of the most impoverished counties in Kenya are among the most equal counties.

The report reviews the fields of child-friendly education, and reviews the child-friendly schools approach through a peacebuilding lens, identifying elements in CFS theory and practice that are ‘peacebuilding resonant’ (already making a contribution to peacebuilding), ‘peacebuilding latent’, and ‘peacebuilding gaps’ in CFS thinking and provision that need to be filled.

In the context of debates around teachers’ role in educational outcomes, accountability and management, this literature review explores their potential to be active agents of peacebuilding. This review specifically aims to explore their role in promoting peace, reconciliation, social cohesion and violence mitigation.

The purpose of this synthesis report is to explore the role of teachers in peacebuilding and social cohesion in four distinct conflict affected environments (Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa and Uganda), and to compare, summarise and critically reflect on key issues, policies and governance aspects that relate to how teachers might contribute to peacebuilding and social cohesion processes.

The review identified three main rationales for the role of education in peacebuilding: education as a ‘peace dividend’; as a means of strengthening governance; and as an entry point for transformation and change.

The purpose of this synthesis report is twofold. First, it examines how education is included in peacebuilding and development frameworks in four distinct conflict-affected environments (Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa and Uganda). Second, it compares, summarises and critically reflects how education policies and governance contribute to the peacebuilding process

This Literature Review on Youth Agency, Peacebuilding and Education is part of the work of the Research Consortium on Education and Peacebuilding, supported by the UNICEF Peacebuilding, Education and Advocacy Programme. It aims to provide insights into youth agency and the dynamics of conflict and peace in conflict‐affected contexts.

This Synthesis Report aims to understand the ways in which the agency of youth – or their ‘space for manoeuvre’ – is impacted (or not) through a range of formal and non- formal education interventions, and how this enables or restricts young peoples ability to contribute to processes of peacebuilding and social cohesion, either in political, socio-cultural or economic ways

In assessing the role of education in Uganda’s peacebuilding process, this study elaborates on three distinct yet interrelated research areas (RA). These are: the integration of education into the country’s peacebuilding process (RA 1); the role of teachers in peacebuilding (RA 2); and the role of formal and non-formal education programmes focusing on youth (RA 3).

This two-year partnership with UNICEF (mid 2014 - mid 2016) seeks to build knowledge on the relationship between education and peacebuilding in conflict-affected contexts. Our data collection and analysis has focused on two specific geographical regions: the wider Yangon area and Mon state.

This research looks at the effects of the Ebola crisis on peacebuilding efforts through education, asking questions about how it has interacted with the Liberian education system’s longer-term post-conflict recovery. In so doing it seeks to reflect on the relationship between different types of crisis and shocks, including conflict and disease outbreaks, and their various impacts on education.

This note provides guidance to UNICEF country offices on programming for peacebuilding through local governance in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Its main objective is to inform the design and implementation of UNICEF peacebuilding interventions and to contribute to the overall effectiveness of UNICEF programming in fragile and conflict-affected contexts
